Anthony Woodville felt he was steaming like a boiling pot, so great was his anger.

‘You incompetent wretch!’ he screamed. ‘You killed the wrong man.’

‘But my lord, you s-said he was in the bed closest to the altar. That was-s all I knew and I followed your ins-structions. How could I know the fellow was-s gone and the bed used by another?’ The man refused to be intimidated by the earl. ‘You never s-said what s-sort of man I had to dispose of nor how he looked.’

Anthony fumed silently, knowing the wretch was right. There had been no description of this Sebastian Foxley supplied by Lionel. Most probably, he had never visited the infirmary in person and hadn’t thought to ask after Foxley’s appearance. No matter: they knew the name. Enquiries could be made.

Later, in her bedchamber, he was forced to admit the failure of his would-be assassin to his sister. At first, Elizabeth said not a word but her eyes were eloquent indeed. Anthony’s heart seemed to shrivel within his chest. The queen’s gaze could reduce lesser men to quaking idiocy.

‘Forgive me, sister. The matter is in hand, you may rest assured.’

‘It had better be, Anthony, for all our sakes.’ She petted the little dog that lay curled in her lap.

‘Foxley will be removed by this time tomorrow. Fear not.’

‘And if he speaks with Gloucester in the mean time? What then?’

Anthony shifted from foot to foot, rucking the exquisite carpet.

‘I-I’ll see that he does not.’

‘How? Tell me.’ She stood up, casting the dog aside so it fell with a yelp. ‘How can you determine that a man you do not know nor recognise does not have privy speech with a duke over whom – above any man in England – we have least control? How can you prevent it? Gloucester is not a lapdog to be commanded like King Edward. If he learns of Clarence’s secret – our secret – that is the end for us all.’

‘I know, Bess. Foxley will be silenced.’

‘See that he is and swiftly.’ She sighed. The Woodville temper was ever a fleeting thing. She smiled at her brother. ‘Come back later, sweet Anthony, when my ladies are all abed.’ She caressed his cheek and he closed his eyes, adoring her touch and covering her beringed fingers with his own.

‘My true soul-mate,’ he whispered.
